ISO 45001 – Occupational Health and Safety

Posted on: January 22nd, 2016 by IQS_Admin No Comments

Over 6300 people die each day from work-related accidents or diseases – that’s nearly 2.3 million every year.

The burden of occupational injuries and diseases is significant, both for employers and the wider economy, resulting is losses from early retirements, staff absence and rising insurance premiums.

To combat the problem, ISO is developing a new standard, ISO 45001 Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements, that will help organizations reduce this burden by providing a framework to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world.

The standard is currently being developed by a committee of occupational health and safety experts and will follow other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.  It will take into account other International Standards in this area such as OHSAS 18001, the International Labour Organization’s ILO-OSH Guidelines, various national standards and the ILO’s international labour standards and conventions.  The new standard is planned for release in October 2016.

ISO 9001:2015

Posted on: January 22nd, 2016 by IQS_Admin No Comments

The development of the new ISO 9001:2015 standard was based on an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary process, i.e. ISO 9001 is catching up with the 21st century, rather than industry having to change their systems to meet ISO requirements.  The new standard is less prescriptive than older versions, focusing instead on performance. This has been achieved by combining the process approach with risk-based thinking, and employing the Plan-Do- Check-Act cycle at all levels in the organization.

ISO 9001:2015 replaces previous editions and certification bodies will have up to three years to migrate certificates to the new version, i.e. from September 2018 the older ISO 9001:2008 will no longer be acceptable.

We have you covered by offering ongoing training on the standards and coaching on how to implement the new changes to ISO 9001:2015 / ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001.  Give us a shout by contacting ashleigh@iqs.co.za for further info.

Global Standard for Packaging & Materials

Posted on: January 21st, 2016 by IQS_Admin No Comments

The BRC (British Retail Consortium) Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials Issue 5 was published in July 2015, setting the latest benchmarks for best practice in packaging manufacture. Issue 5 will replace Issue 4 for all audits from the 1 January 2016.  The latest issue of this BRC Global Standard focuses on:

  • a move from ‘good practice’ to ‘best practice’
  • the quality management systems process in printed packaging controls
  • continuing to ensure consistency of the audit process
  • providing a Standard that meets retailers’ and brand owners’ needs to reduce the audit burden
  • better recognition of the diversity of the packaging industry and its customers’ demands
  • encouraging greater transparency and traceability in the supply chain
  • encouraging adoption of the Standard as a means of improving product safety at small sites and facilities where processes are still in development

Transition to ISO 9001:2015

Posted on: January 18th, 2016 by IQS_Admin No Comments

By now everyone in the quality game is aware of the new version of ISO 9001, with many already preparing the arduous task of reviewing their current system to transition to the new Standard.  The new standard was published on September 15, 2015.  This means that the ISO 9001:2008 standard will become obsolete on September 14, 2018.  As a result, all ISO 9001:2008 certifications issued in late 2015 and beyond will have to bear an expiry date of September 14, 2018.  If your organization does not have a transition audit prior to the end of the transition period/obsolescence date of ISO 9001:2008, then you will no longer be certified as of the end of the transition period and in order to become certified to ISO 9001:2015, you will need to start over with an initial audit (Stage 1 and Stage 2).  Its worth contacting your Certification Body to enquire if they have any cut-offs for audits against the ISO9001: 2008 version as well as to ensure the timely scheduling of any transition audits to avoid an unfortunate situation.

Besides reviewing and updating the QMS, you will also need to undertake some kind of transition training for all staff, so don’t leave your ISO 9001:2015 transition to the last minute, there is much to do, and IQS can help.
